Pilgrimage to Iona
A week long Retreat on Iona, Scotland
Confluence: A Center for Spirituality is pleased to announce a “Pilgrimage to Iona, Scotland” the week of April 20-April 27, 2013. Spring is generally thought to be the best time to visit Iona.
To the Gaels, Iona is I Chaluim Chille – the isle of Colm Cille, an Irish priest and prince who was to become revered as Saint Columba. An island of typically Hebridean beauty, it holds a unique place in the story of Scotland and Christianity. 2013 is the 1450th anniversary of Columba’s arrival on Iona as well as 75 years since the Iona Community was founded and 25 years since the MacLeod Centre was opened.
Below are two web pages you might find of interest. The first, on this site, is a reflection and some photos The Rev. Susan Skinner took while on Iona this past spring and the second is the official Iona site.

Plans are still taking shape as we make this announcement. The trip will include an optional gathering after breakfast for meditation and/ brief input regarding Celtic spirituality and its relationship to Iona. The rest of the day will be used as participants choose (we will be offering some suggestions such as hikes around the island or visiting various locations on the island for reflection and meditation or to just enjoy the magnificent scenery on this idyllic 3 mile long, 1 1/2 mile wide island off the coast of Scotland). We will then gather for a pre-dinner time to share and reflect on the day and then enjoy dinner as a group.
There are ample opportunities on Iona for worship – two services at the Bishop’s House (Scottish Episcopal Church) and two at the Iona Abbey (the international, ecumenical Iona Community).
We have already put down the initial deposit to secure rooms at the St. Columba Hotel. All travel arrangements will be booked through the travel agent for this tour, Pathfinders Travel in Holland, Michigan who knows the intricacies of travel to Iona very well. If you decide to join us, the tour agent will be in direct contact with you to help you arrange your trip.
This retreat is expected to sell out quickly as we only have room for 15 people. A few single supplements will be available. Please let us know if this is of interest to you at your earliest convenience.
Please contact The Rev. Susan Skinner at firstname.lastname@example.org or (314) 252-8997 if you are interested.
